About Dvorak

Dvorak was born long ago in a country that no longer exists. Dvorak has taught History; German, Geography; Math and Gifted Education. He also ran a Chess Club for over 9 years in the Sonoran Desert. Dvorak holds a Masters Degree in Gifted Education; a Bachelors Degree in History and Social Sciences and holds a teaching credential in California and Tennessee. Mr. Dvorak plays violin for a local symphony orchestra as a hobby.

What is Scholar Seminar?

Scholar Seminar is a Gifted Education pull-out class that promotes critical thinking and creative problem solving to advanced topics.

What do we do in Scholar Seminar?

We strive to teach critical thinking and creative problem-solving applied to advanced topics in math, science, engineering, social studies, and literature. The curriculum is designed to be well-rounded and is naturally geared to challenge and stretch the minds of our gifted learners.

Our curriculum never goes stale and is drawn from wide variety of sources from all over the world. Instruction is differentiated and strives to meet the skills of many different kinds of gifted learners.

When do we meet?

At Ellis we meet on Mondays and Tuesdays.

At Hawkins we meet on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

August 2020--

Ellis and Hawkins 6th Graders will begin with Ancient History which serves as a foundation for the classical study of Latin.

Ellis and Hawkins 7th Graders will begin the Year with an overview of the Industrial Revolution which will culminate in Steam Engine Demonstrations to be held on the days students attend. A Photographic Project which has been an annual tradition for nearly a decade will also be on course. These lessons will be what was missed in the Spring of 2020

Ellis 8th Graders will begin the year with the Engineering Assessment that was started in the Spring.

Hawkins 8th Graders will begin the year with an overview of the Industrial Revolution which will culminate in Steam Engine Demonstrations to be held on days that students attend. A Photographic project will also be offered . Our Engineering Assessment is on hold until September.

ASSESSMENT #1 was Held in August's last week.

September 2020-

Ellis and Hawkins 6th Graders will learn about Ancient Greek Philosophies and Ancient Greek Maths

Ellis and Hawkins 7th Graders will begin an Unsolved Mysteries Unit which is normally done in the Spring.

Ellis 8th Graders will finish the Engineering Assessment and Begin a Renaissance Unit.

Hawkins 8th Graders Will have a special Unit on Gemology and will then begin an Engineering Assessment.



October 2020

Ellis and Hawkins 6th Graders will conclude Roman History and Latin and will begin a Unit about Architecture.

Ellis and Hawkins 7th Graders will Begin an Engineering Unit which concludes with an Engineering Project using real-world
                                                      problems and graded by a team of civil and structural engineers .
Ellis and Hawkins 8th Graders will being a series of Chemistry Pilot Lessons and will study the nature of Phi and the Golden Ratio in                                                       Art and Architecture.

November 2020

Ellis and Hawkins 6th Graders will begin building Bridges made of Fetuccini and Wood Glue; the bridge building will be guided with                                                        basic Engineering Principles in mind and various Truss formulas will be learned and applied to the                                                        bridge building process.
Ellis and Hawkins 7th Graders will complete an Engineering Assessment Project and will begin a Unit about Parliamentary Debate in
                                                       the British Parliamentary Tradition.
Ellis and Hawkins 8th Graders will complete a series about Renaissance Art and Music. A dome project will begin at the end of the
                                                      Month which will use Dome Formulas and will also make use of the famous Ellis Dome

January 2021

Ellis and Hawkins 6th Graders will finish building bridges. We will begin a Gemology unit to teach students basic Chemistry                                                        principles and to also allow students to learn how to tell real Gemstones apart from the Fakes. We
                                                      have access to thousands of Gemstones so students will have an opportunity to put their newfound                                                        knowledge to the test in a hands-on way.
Ellis and Hawkins 7th Graders will explore a curious Brain Unit followed by a unit on Blues Music and Exquisite Corpse creative                                                        writing.

Ellis and Hawkins 8th Graders will complete their Dome Building and Dome Formulas Unit and we will end the month with a
                                                        Surveying Unit which will take us outdoors.


FEBRUARY 2021

Ellis and Hawkins 6th Graders will being a Scientific Inquiry unit coupled with Local History.

Ellis and Hawkins 7th Graders completed an exciting new Navigation and Orienteering Unit; students learned how to navigate using
                                                      degree bearing and we had a great hunt all around the grounds of the school to test those new skills.                                                       We will take advantage of the fact that all students are now present to begin a Parliamentary Debate                                                       Unit whereby students will learn the rules of debate according to British Parliamentary Tradition. We                                                      will hold our own debates early next month.

Ellis and Hawkins 8th Graders have begun a wildly popular Intuitive Chemistry Unit which teaches some basics of Chemistry in an                                                        intuitive and hands-on kind of way.

APRIL 2021

Ellis and Hawkins 6th Graders have completed an Industrial Revolution Unit with a Steam Engine Demonstration and have just
                                                     completed a Surreal Art Unit.

Ellis and Hawkins 7th Graders and 8th Graders Have begun a new Physics Unit which will take us through all of the major Themes in Physics; Classsical Mechanics; Thermodynamics; Waves; Electricity and Magnetism; and Theoretical Physics and Relativity in addition to Quantum Mechanics will all be explored.
